Here’s a deep dive on
Primarily the focus of this upgrade is on increasing the efficiency of the L2s and reducing the gas fees (almost by 16x)!
This is possible via the method of Proto-Danksharding which is one of the 9 EIPs proposed in this upgrade(EIP4844).
Let’s understand first how L2s operate and how Dencun is changing the paradigm!
This makes L1s more efficient as the L2s directly send the proofs of the transactions to the L1s for the record, performing the execution part separately(off-chain).
But this is also not the most efficient way for the L2s to function as they only need to store those proofs on the L1s for a few weeks until validators verify them.
And here comes the method of Proto-Danksharding which provides L2s with a transient data storage option called blobspace which allows L2s to store data for a shorter period (18 days) in blob formats that are temporary chunks of transaction data.
This will guarantee data availability and will also be much more affordable than Calldata.
The word Dencun signifies upgrades in both the Consensus Layer( Deneb) and the Execution Layer(Cancun).
The idea blobspace comes as a brainchild of Ethereum researcher Dankrad Feist’s concept of Danksharding.
And protolambda, another Ethereum developer & researcher built on top of this idea a prototype system known as Proto-Danksharding which eventually came up as EIP4844.
This is how EIP4844 is changing the paradigm solving for optimum scalability making it more attractive to builders to build on!
That’s all on the Dencun update for now and stay tuned for the mainnet launch!
